about

Here's the science bit: Concentrate: The song's about communing with people from your past (or the dead - dark offices, you see?), about pining for someone from your past and almost being able to hear their voice - like a spirit voice - clearly in your mind. Or like an apparition. There's a triple-meaning to the song's title: holding 'offices', or an interior conversation, with someone from your past; literally about dark offices; y'know when you're on the bus at night and you pass offices in the city and they're all quiet and dark. Finally, there's the thing about the abandoned offices throughout the pandemic (although the song was written just before all that...) & that thing about working in offices that are dark and semi-abandoned and feeling lonely and bored and past caring. Thank you.

lyrics

Under the weather and freaking out
About
Something I've read or seen
Or dreamed
It's a dangerous business, these dark offices
With discarnate souls
It can swallow us whole
Now I can hear your voice so clear like you were in the next room
I can't believe that it's you
My plans were frustrated by a compromise
And etiolated by a lack of light
You say obsessed when you really mean really preoccupied
Or just interested in
I know you warned me, I know you said sorry
Don't worry
I always knew you would go
Oh, cheer up, old boy
Oh cheer up
And now I can't wait for something to take me
Away from these dark offices
Where everything's fake and disintegrating
And paper thin
And rigged so you can't win
And rigged so you can't win
